REGULAR MEETING MARCH 12, 2007 <br />the 13d` round, as she competed in the school corporation's intermediate centers <br />competition which sent four (4) spellers from each school to the competition. <br />Now, Therefore, be it resolved, by the Common Council of the City of South <br />Bend, Indiana, as follows: <br />Section L On behalf of all of the citizens of the City of South Bend, Indiana, the <br />Common Council publicly commends and honors PAOLA SARMIENTO, an 8~` grade <br />Honor Roll student at Green Intermediate Center for winning South Bend Community <br />School Corporation's annual spelling bee competition on February 15, 2007. <br />Section II The Common Council notes that PAOLA SARMIENTO moved to <br />South Bend from Mexico in March of 2002, knowing no English at that time and then <br />began learning English for the neat several years and excelled in the school corporation's <br />English Language Learner Program. <br />Section III. The South Bend Common Council would also like to commend <br />Greene Intermediate Center's Principal Thomas Fujimura, Assistant Principal Joseph <br />Somers; Bilingual Coordinator Dora Balderas; and Jo Lake, Paola's Spelling Coach, for <br />their dedication, service and leadership of the 481 Greene students. <br />Section IV. The Common Council wishes PAOLA SARMIENTO continued <br />success as she moves onto compete in the regional spelling bee; and wishes her the very <br />best in her studies at Riley High School this fall as she continues to be a role model as <br />she pursues her career goal of becoming a professional engineer. <br />Section V. This Resolution shall be in full force and effect from and after its <br />adoption by the Council and approval by the Mayor. <br />s/Derek D. Dieter, lgt District <br />s/Charlotte D. Luecke, Mayor of South Bend <br />Councilmember Erv Kuspa, 434 South Liberty Street, South Bend, Indiana, made the <br />presentation for this Resolution by first offering his comments and then reading the <br />Resolution in its entirety and presenting it to Paola Sarmiento. <br />A Public Hearing was held on the Resolution at this time. <br />Paola Sarmiento thanked the Council for this wonderful honor. <br />Mr. Thomas Fujimura, Principal, Green Intermediate Center, thanked the Council for this <br />honor on behalf of Paola Sarmiento and Green Intermediate Center. He thanked the <br />Council for embracing the diverse ethnic backgrounds that South Bend has so graciously <br />welcomed. <br />Councilmember Kuspa made a motion to adopt this Resolution by acclamation. <br />Councilmember Varner seconded the motion which carried. <br />
