Luecke, Mayor of South Bend <br />Councilmember Charlotte Pfeifer, 1013 W. Washington Street, South Bend, Indiana, <br />made the presentation for this Resolution by first offering her comments and then reading <br />the Resolution in its entirety and presenting it to Coach Marilyn Coddens and the Lady <br />Panthers. <br />Coach Marilyn Coddens thanked the Council for this great honor. She noted that they <br />have been on awhirl-wind since winning the State Championship. Coach Coddens noted <br />that they ended the season 28-1, and in the USA Today Newspaper, they are ranked 18a` <br />in the Nation and on SportsIllustrated.com they are ranked 12d` in the Nation. She <br />thanked everyone for their support. <br />A Public Hearing was held on the Resolution at this time. <br />There was no one present wishing to speak to the Council either in favor of or in <br />opposition to this Resolution. <br />Councilmember Puzzello made a motion to adopt this Resolution by acclamation. <br />Councilmember Kelly seconded the motion which carried. <br />RESOLUTION NO. 3715-07 A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON <br />COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH <br />END, INDIANA, PUBLICLY HONORING <br />GREEN INTERMEDIATE CENTER 8TH <br />GRADE HONOR ROLL STUDENT <br />PAOLA SARMIENTO FOR WINNING <br />THE 34TH ANNUAL SOUTH BEND <br />COMMUNITY SCHOOL <br />CORPORATION'S SPELLING BEE IN <br />2007 <br />Whereas, the Common Council of the City of South Bend, Indiana, recognizes <br />that the National Spelling Bee was initially established in 1925 as a consolidation of <br />numerous local spelling bees, with E.W. Scripps Company having the rights to the <br />highly-competitive spelling competition; and <br />Whereas, this year, the 80d` Scripps National Spelling Bee will be held in the <br />ballroom of the Grand Hyatt Washington Hotel in Washington, D.C. and will spotlight <br />winners of sponsored regional spelling bees held throughout the United States; and <br />Whereas, the City of South Bend, Indiana, has a proud history of National <br />Spelling Bee Champions with Betty Robinson of South Bend winning the contest in 1928 <br />when she correctly spelled the final word, albumen; and in 2004 when David Scott <br />Pilarski Tidmarsh of South Bend won the contest when he correctly spelled the final <br />word, autochthonous; and <br />Whereas, the South Bend Common Council sees another champion in the making <br />in Paola Sarmiento, the lgt Hispanic winner of the South Bend Community School <br />Corporation's 34a` Annual Spelling Bee, when she correctly spelled extemporaneous in <br />
