South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting –April 9, 2010

bypass into this network.

Mr. Ward
: My main question is, when it is
not raining, so all the drain pipes are empty,
why can’t rather than the overflow shutoff,
which is a good thing, why don’t they pump
the ponds out. Do you really need the two
ponds?

Mr. Schalliol
: We actually do need two
ponds, we actually need a bigger second
pond. Because of the amount of water that is
generated in this network we need more
retention than we have now. We have looked
at pumps and pumping the water down to the
existing retention area back behind the
shopping center of Ironwood and Ireland, but
you would be pumping water up hill to pump
it downhill to pump it into a pond, so that
doesn’t work. The problem is we don’t have
a lot of positive discharges other than the
combined storm sewer network which we are
not allowed to be pumping into.

Mr. Ward
: When they put the Ireland Road
railroad overpass in,they had monstrous
pumps pumping water out. So they don’t
have a pump that’s sufficiently …

Mr. Schalliol
: They do, but the cost to install
a pump to pump water uphill, and then
maintenance costs, there are all sorts of
issues.

Mr. Ward
: Do you have a dollar amount?

Mr. Schalliol
: Not with me today, but it is a
very expensive process.

Mr. Ward
: Is it a quarter of a million
dollars?

10
