REGULAR MEETING March 12, 2018 <br /> None from the public wished to speak in favor of or opposition to this bill. <br /> Councilmember Gavin Ferlic made a motion to adopt Bill No. 18-08 by acclamation. <br /> Councilmember Karen White seconded this motion which carried unanimously by a voice vote of <br /> eight(8) ayes. <br /> 18-09 A RESOLUTION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL <br /> OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, <br /> DECLARING THE WEEK OF MARCH 25-31, <br /> 2018 AS FARMWORKERS AWARENESS <br /> WEEK IN SOUTH BEND, INDIANA <br /> Councilmember Jo M. Broden, 1319 Otsego Street, South Bend, IN and Jesusa Rivera, 2807 Mac <br /> Arthur Avenue, South Bend, IN both served as presenters for this bill. Councilmember Jo M. <br /> Broden stated,What we would like to do is read the resolution into the record and,both,the English <br /> and Spanish version. <br /> Councilmember Jo M. Broden continued, Whereas, the South Bend Common Council notes that <br /> National Farmworker Awareness Week (NFAW) is a week of action to raise awareness about <br /> farmworker issues in our communities; and <br /> Ms.Rivera stated,Considerando, el Consejo Comun de South Bend observa que Semana Nacional <br /> de Los Campesinos es una semana de accion para crear conciencia sobre cuestiones de trabajadores <br /> agricolas en nuestras comunidades; y <br /> Councilmember Jo M. Broden stated, Whereas, this ye marks the 19th Annual Farmworker <br /> Awareness Week which provides opportunities to learn about farmworker conditions and to honor <br /> their important contributions to society; and <br /> Ms. Rivera stated, Considerando, este ano se celebra la 19a Annual Semana de Los Campesinos <br /> que ofrece oportunidades de aprender acerca de las condiciones de los trabajadores del campo y <br /> para honrar sus contribuciones importantes a la sociedad; y <br /> Councilmember Jo M. Broden stated, Whereas, eighty-five percent (85%) of our fruits and <br /> vegetables are handpicked by an estimated 2-3 million men,women, and children working in farm <br /> fields throughout the United States. Farms are in every state yet farmworkers remain largely <br /> invisible and continue to live and work in horrific conditions. Farm work is the third most <br /> dangerous job in the United States; and <br /> Ms. Rivera stated, Considerando, ochenta y cinco por ciento (85%) de nuestras frutas y verduras <br /> son seleccionado por un estimado 2 millones hombres, mujeres y ninos que trabajan en campos <br /> agricolas de los Estados Unidos. Cesar Chavez dedicated himself to non- <br /> violent organizing for fair wages, safer working conditions and dignity for the men, women and <br /> children who work in the fields. <br /> Ms.Rivera stated,Considerando,este ano Semana de Los Campesinos coincide con el cumpleanos <br /> de Cesar Chavez el 31 de marzo. Cesar Chavez se dedico a la organizacion no violenta para salarios <br /> justos, condiciones de trabajo mfrs seguras y dignidad para los hombres, mujeres y ninos que <br /> trabajan en los campos. <br /> Councilmember Jo M. Broden stated,Now, Therefore, be it resolved, by the Common Council of <br /> the City of South Bend, Indiana,as follows: Section One (1) On behalf of the residents of the City <br /> of South Bend, the South Bend Common Council is proud to honor all of the thousands of men, <br /> women and children who plant,cultivate,harvest and process our agricultural products throughout <br /> the State of Indiana and throughout the United States. <br /> 4 <br />
