REGULAR MEETING March 12, 2018 <br /> Ms. Rivera stated, Ahora, por to tanto, se resuelve, por el Consejo Comun de la Ciudad de South <br /> Bend, Indiana, como sigue: Secci6n Uno (1) De parte de los residentes de la Ciudad de South <br /> Bend, el Consejo Comun de South Bend esta orgulloso de honrar todos los miles de hombres, <br /> mujeres y ninos que plantan, cultive, coseche y procese nuestros productos agricolas en todas <br /> partes del estado de Indiana y en todas partes de los Estados Unidos. <br /> Councilmember Jo M. Broden stated, Section Two (2) The Common Council hereby declares the <br /> week of March 25 —31, 2018 as Farmworker Awareness Week in South Bend, Indiana, and calls <br /> upon everyone to reflect upon the tireless efforts of Cesar Chavez whose dedication and <br /> commitment to raise awareness has helped bring justice to those who toil in the fields. <br /> Ms. Rivera stated, Secci6n Dos (2)El Consejo Comun declara la semana del 25 al 31 de marzo de <br /> 2018 como la Semana de Los Campesinos en South Bend, Indiana,y pide a cada uno a reflexionar <br /> sobre los esfuerzos incansables de Cesar Chavez cuya dedicaci6n y el compromiso de levantar la <br /> conciencia han ayudado a traer a la justicia a aquellos que trabajan duro en los campos. <br /> Councilmember Jo.M. They live in just about every county in Indiana. <br /> • Workers are up at time from 4:00 am working field to field, finishing the day many times <br /> after 10:00 pm. <br /> • Proteus has trained over 4,000 farmworkers in Indiana in Pesticide and Heat Stress. <br /> • EPA estimates 300,000 farmworkers are poisoned by pesticides each year. <br /> • The health status of a migrant farmworker is the same standard for most third world nations. <br /> • The agricultural industry is one of the highest worker fatality rates. <br /> • Farmworkers work under the suns harsh and hot rays 10 to 12 hours a day often with little <br /> access to shade or water. <br /> • There are over 3 million seasonal and migrant farmworkers in the United States. <br /> • Average annual income for a farmworker is$11,000. For a family of 4 it averages$16,000. <br /> • Barriers to receive healthcare is lack of transportation, cost, no translation services or <br /> limited and frequent relocations. <br /> • 53% of farmworkers children have unmet medical needs. <br /> • They continue to be the lowest paid,least protected,and unhealthiest workers in the United <br /> States. <br /> Thank you to our partners: <br /> WorkOne, DWD, Ivy Tech, DOL, Migrant Coalition, St. Vincent de Paul,NIFB, and others <br /> Councilmember Jo M. Broden stated, There is great work being done in our community and <br /> sometimes, I think, a video shares that message pretty profoundly. In addition to tonight's <br /> resolution, we've submitted other resources with this resolution. <br /> This being the time heretofore set for the Public Hearing on the above bill, proponents and <br /> opponents were given an opportunity to be heard. <br /> 5 <br />
