REGULAR MEETING March 12, 2018
into his show,he helped us forget our troubles, even if for just a short while. We rarely knew when
he had worries of his own. For instance, a granddaughter who weighed two (2)pounds and twelve
(12) ounces at birth. He shared his joys too, including falling in love. Jon Thompson made it look
easy. For forty-two (42) years his radio show has been one (1) of the many things that makes our
community a good one (1). We may not again see the likes of"JT in the Morning"but we are all
the better for his time on the air and we are all the happier for the moments he has shared with us.
Jon Thompson, 17313 Farmington Square Road, Granger, IN, stated, My turn, huh? Forty-two
(42) years seems like it has gone by in a hurry. The only regret I have is I didn't get paid by the
word. What I'm getting used to, a little bit, is waking up in the morning and not saying "Oh my
God, I'm late for work."As a matter of fact, today I had to remind myself what day it was, so that,
perhaps, is a good sign. I remember the early days, right across the street, at the WSBT studios
and those first few days I had an early newsman partner named Wayne Doolittle who said, "I'll
give this kid about a week and a half."Well, I tried to work hard and get better and the years went
by and pretty soon people discovered I had a huge talent. They were right and I've been married
to her for seventeen (17) years. This is a great honor, it really is. I thank you for this evening and
this proclamation that I will remember always. It is unexpected and probably undeserved, but
absolutely appreciated to be sure. Thank you so very much.
Council President Tim Scott opened the floor to comments from members of the Council.
Councilmember Karen White stated, Mr. Jon "JT" Thompson, I have always enjoyed your radio
show and I'm quite certain WSBT did as well. You've been a joy. You're committed to public
service and you also ensured the news you shared was always the very best. I wish you the very
best in retirement. Enjoy yourself but don't forget about us.
Councilmember Gavin Ferlic stated, I will definitely miss your voice on the radio but thank you
for all that you've done.
Councilmember John Voorde stated, Thank you for all your contributions to the community. I
wonder if you might consider giving golf lessons?
Councilmember Jo M. Broden stated, And he does need them. Where in our community have you
not been seen or heard? Really, such a gift. Thank you for these many years. I think everybody
shares this understanding but your daytime job was only, really, a very tiny portion of your impact
on our community. Speaking on behalf of a number of non-profits that sat in your hot-seat and
interviewed, you brought public awareness to the great work in the community that they do. You
have opened up so many things for so many individuals in our community. Thank you very much
and best wishes to you. I'm wondering if we missed something in the resolution with regard to a
place or destination you would like to go because once it's in print, it has to happen. But, thank
you very much.
Councilmember Sharon L. McBride stated, Thank you for your service. I was six (6) years old
when you started but I have listened throughout the years and you will be greatly missed.
Councilmember Regina Williams-Preston stated,I was five (5). 1 have to say, it is such a pleasure
meeting you torng and thank you, Councilmember Davis, for bringing this to everyone's
attention. This is an honor that will be in the record books. Like, the history of the City of South
Bend, and I think it's so fitting because I know, just like everyone has already said, you are a part
of our lives. You came into our homes and I just have very fond memories of your jingle. It is just
phenomenal and just really exciting that this has been etched into the history of the City of South
Bend just like it is etched into, I know, all of our hearts.
Councilmember Tim Scott stated, JT, thank you so much, and your wife, for giving up so much
time. I'm glad you'll have time, now,to do that. The one (1) amazing thing about radio is that you
are that voice out there. You can champion causes and that means more than anything and I know
you'll cherish that. Councilmember Williams-Preston is absolutely right, this is in the history
books. Wayne Doolittle is a neighbor of mine and I'll mention that we saw each other. Thank you
so much for what you've done.
This being the time heretofore set for the Public Hearing on the above bill, proponents and
opponents were given an opportunity to be heard.
