42 Tu es day , February 4th . , 1930
TO '17E EONOR13LE BOARD OF PUBLIC YORKS
Gentlemen:
The Indiana end Michigan Electric Company is spending large sums of mon
in a re -building 7ogram that will put their distribution system in first class condi-
tion and render a largpr service to the citizens of South Bend. This work has been prC-
gressing throughout the business section of the City during tie past year and is now
spreading out into the residential sections where is is greatly needed, both for the
improvement to the service and the safety of lives and property.
The work referred to in the attached petition is a part of this re-
building program and perhaps, is needed more than in any other section of the City.due
to the decayed condition of the present pole line construction. I have personally gone
over the entire situation covered by this petition and have advised with the engineers o
the Electric Compaty relative to locations and construction and while it is to be regret
ed that pole line construction must be placed on any street, there does not seem to be
a.ny alternative in such section where alleys are not provided.
You will notice that this petition calls for pole line construction on
Van Buren Street from 'Vlilber Street to the alley east of Blaine avenue; thence south to
the first alley- intersection, thence east .in the alley s nuth of van Buren Street to the
alley intersection east of Cottage Grove Avenue, thence south in this alley to Lindsey
Street, east on Lindsey Street to Portage Avenye across Portage Avenue to Forest Avenue
and north on Fgrett Avenue to tie -in with present distribution. Another section will
extend south from Lindsey Street in the alley east of Cushing Street to the second alley
intersection, thence east to Leland Avenue to tie in with present line cortruction.
There has been a pole line on VanBuren St- e et for the past twenty-five
years and the present proposal is to replace this line. The only change is to straight
out the line and p,&t all poles on one side of the street. There is also a pole line on
Lindsey Street on the north side of the street. It is desirable to move these poles to
the south side of the street.
In order to make these poles as inconspicuous as possible the Electric
Company has agreed to place block creosoted poles on Van Buren and LiAdsey Streets.
I recommend that this petition be granted as outlined.
Respectfully submitted,
Wm. F. Qaalis.
Approved by the Board of Public Works.
v
M. F. Doran ,
John K. Smogor
Ralph H. Kuss."
City Engineer , N.
