<br />requested provided, however, that all building materials will be delivered through the
<br />now existing alley entrance.
<br />STREET DEPARTMENT: The need for a heavier Bulldozer` and a 1/2-ton pickup truck for the
<br />Sanitation Department was considered and the Clerk was directed to advertise for bids.
<br />The topic of removal of rails, to proceed with construction of the three islands
<br />needed at Bendix Drive and Westmoor, was next taken up, and the Board ordered that this
<br />construction proceed immediately, disregarding the rails in question, which will., accord
<br />ingly, become a part of the islands foundations.
<br />The Board then took up the matter of the bids opened at the regular meeting of
<br />August loth and awarded contract for ten White truck chassis to South Bend Truck and
<br />Equipment, inc., and contract for ten 12 cubic yard Leach Packmaster bodies to Leach
<br />Company, Oshkosh, Wisconsin. By this action, the immediate equipment needs of the
<br />Department of Sanitation for this type of equipment have been met and all other bids
<br />were, accordingly, rejected.
<br />Some discussion was given the matter of uniforms for thirty employees of the
<br />Department of Sanitation. No decision was reached and the matter is to be held in
<br />abeyance.
<br />The Board next confirmed the emergency installation of manhole on Madison Street
<br />between Sommer Street and Arthur Street, work being performed by the Niles Excavating
<br />Company.
<br />A billing for the forty-six feet of lead service installed on Huey Street, in the
<br />total amount of 134.06, rendered by Hamilton Plumbing & Heating Co., Inc,, was
<br />examined and ordered filed with all papers pertaining to the Tri -State Excavators, and
<br />the Board further ordered,that no payments are to be made to the Tri-State Excavators
<br />until this firm can show settlement of -this bill, and of all costs and damages involved
<br />in the automobile accident caused by exposed and unprotected manhole top, resulting
<br />from,contractor's negligence.
<br />FINAL ORDER - RESOLUTION NO. 2759 - 1953
<br />Whereas, the Board of Public Works, did on the 24th day of August 1953, adopt a Pre-
<br />liminary Order designating Class C, Type 1, Cement Concrete as the kind of pavement for
<br />the improvement of LAWTON STREET, from the west line of Olive Street to the east line
<br />of Washington Street by constructing a Class C pavement in accordance with Improvement
<br />':Resolution No. 2759, 1953., passed by this Board on June 29, 1953, and -confirmed by this
<br />'Board on August 3, 1953, therefore
<br />BE IT RESOLVED, that the Preliminary Order is hereby, in all things confirmed and
<br />!said street ordered paved with a Class C, type 1, cement concrete pavement.

<br />In the matter of bids for the improvement of LAWTON STREET from the west line of
<br />Olive Street to the east line of Washington Street by constructing a Class C pavement
<br />lin accordance with Improvement Resolution No. 2759, 1953, passed by this Board on
<br />June 29, 1953 and confirmed by this Board on August 3, 1953, the bid was awarded to
<br />Reed Construction Company, Mishawaka, Indiana, as they submitted the lowest and best
<br />bid for Class C, type 1, cement concrete pavement, for the sum of $12,714-00.
