The Department is overseeing the placement of the MLK-Hesburgh Monument in <br /> Leighton Plaza in downtown South Bend.The monument is a larger than life depiction <br /> of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Fr.Theodore Hesburgh holding hands and singing We <br /> Shall Overcome on June 21st 1964 at Soldier Field in Chicago.The 110%scaled <br /> figures are made out of bronze and invite the public to join their hands with the two <br /> great men and reflect on South Bend's continued commitment to civil rights. <br /> 2. The monument is completely funded by private donations and is activating an <br /> underutilized public space with public art. <br /> D. Vibrant,Welcoming Neighborhoods <br /> 1. Light Up South Bend added several new lights in the city's neighborhoods.The <br /> initiative is a partnership with Indiana Michigan Power to make neighborhoods safe <br /> and welcoming. <br /> a. Additional city street lights added: 74 <br /> b. New lampposts (part of cost share program): 30 <br /> E. Well-Governed and Administered City <br /> 1. The Engineering Division served as a resource for several City departments including: <br /> DCI, PVA, Fire,Streets and Sewers,Traffic and Lighting.As a result, Engineering was <br /> involved in a total of 126 active projects in 2016. <br /> 2. Central services saw a 17% increase in outside revenues from 2015 in its Fleet <br /> maintenance division and 47% increase in its radio shop <br /> a. Internal Fleet availability goal was 98%; actual 97.56% <br /> b. Rebuilt two dump beds for the Street Department to prolong the life of the <br /> trucks <br /> c. Rebuilt several Street Department leaf vacs <br /> d. Up fitted and put into service 97 new vehicles <br /> e. Replaced an engine in a Street Department tandem axle dump truck <br /> f. Coordinated effort with IT and PD to reprogram 800+ Public Safety radios <br /> g. Radio Tower Safety Improvements on 5 towers <br /> 3. Solid Waste implemented the new Yard Waste Program by going container-only for <br /> weekly pick-up,where 47% of the citizens participate. <br /> a. Solid Waste delivered 7,628 yard waste containers,for a total of 15,609 to <br /> date. <br /> b. Picked up 4,720 yard waste extras. <br /> c. Diverted 3,878 tons of yard waste from the landfill. <br /> d. Removed 28,909 tons of trash. <br /> e. In August and September,Solid Waste came to the need of the citizens and <br /> offered free extra pick-ups for the remnants of the 100 year storm that <br /> affected South Bend. <br /> f. With a focus on improving and maintaining a high-level of customer service <br /> Solid Waste reduced the following from the previous year: <br /> a. Trash misses by 60%. <br /> b. Yard waste misses by 20%. <br /> c. Customer complaints by 45%. <br /> 4.
