Seals
Chief of Po i i ce
Upon motion made, seconded and carried, the Board accepted the Chief's
recommendation and approved the request for retirement, as of'August
16, 1972. The Clerk was instructed to write Mr. Schindler expressing
appreciation for his long years of service to ,the department, and a
wish for his well being.
POLICE DEPARTMENT COMMENDATION
Miss Virginia Guthrie appeared before the Board to bring to their attention
a paragraph in the weekly bulletin of St. Patrick's Church in South Bend
wherein they state,"Thaks to very efficient work on the part of our City
policemen the three keys which were taken from the sacristy last Saturday
were recovered on Monday. Needless to say we were happy to get them back,
especially so quickly. We wish to publicly express our gratitude to the
Police Force." The Board thanked Miss Guthrie for calling the matter to
their attention and directed that the Chief be notified.
BUILDING DEPARTMENT - SUB STANDARD DIVISION
Mr. Kenneth Hadley, Inspector, appeared before the Board in the place of
Isaiah Steed, Sub -Standard Director, who is out of town at a meeting, and
matters pertaining to that department were discussed as follows:
513 North Hill Street Arthur Hurd, Jr., Clarence Hurd and Brenda Hurd
were requested to come to the meeting to show cause why the structure
at 513 North Hill Street should not be demolished. Mrs. Margaret Hurd
appeared and stated she is their mother, and they are away at school,
and she would represent them. A letter was presented from Patrick
Brennan, Attorney for the estate of Clarence Pierce, wherein he stated
he wished the house demolished and the bill sent to the estate. Upon
motion made, seconded and carried, Mr. Hadley was authorized to seek
bids for the demolition of the structure.
515 North Hill Street Upon the recommendation of Mr. Sweeney this
matter was continued for one week.
535 S. Taylor Street Esther Frank Litow having been requested to appear
before the Board to show cause why the structure at 535 South Tailor Street
should not be demolished, and not having appeared, the Board now, upon
motion made, seconded and carried, authorized Mr. Hadley to seek bids for
the demolition of the said structure.
1207 West JeffersonMr. Harold Slutsky, member of the J. & G. Insurance
and Realty Company, appeared before the Board to state his firm had
contracted with Jerry Davis to demolish the building prior to the awarding
of a contract by the Board to Bryant Demolition Company. It was the
Board's opinion that in the absence of any evidence to the contrary, the
awarding of the bid to Mr. Bryant should stand. However, because both
M:r. Steed of the Sub -Standards Division and Mr. Slutsky are out of
town, and they were the ones involved in the transactions, upon motion made,
seconded and carried, the matter was oon tinued for two weeks.
