3 5'
REGULAR MEETING MAY 14, 1973
REQUEST TO CLOSE MADISON STREET BETWEEN ST. PETER AND ST. LOUIS
The Board received the following memo:
To: Board of Works
From: Bureau of Traffic & Lighting, Clem Hazinski, Manager
Subject: Closing of Madison Street between St. Peter and St. Louis
Due to construction of the addition to the St. Joseph Hospital on Madison
Street a request has been made by the Sollitt Construction Company through
Mr. Doyle H. Baum to close Madison Street between St. Peter and St. Louis.
A meeting was held with the Sollitt engineers on Tuesday, May 7, 1973 at
the site. The following observations are made:
The construction along Madison Street at that location will be adjacent to
the sidewalk and because of the steep grade to the north, all construction
equipment such as cranes, etc. will occupy Madison Street. Also the
property on the south side of Madison has been purchased by the hospital
for equipment storage and numerous corssings will be necessary. As a
consequence, traffic movement would be quite hazardous.
O
• Approval is recommended to close the street for a period of one year with
Q a re -application if additional time is required. Such approval is recommended
with the following provisions:
1. Advance warning signs with flashers to be installed
2. Street Closed signs with flashers to be installed
3. Other necessary construction signage as required. All signs to conform
to the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
4. A street occupancy permit be obtained from the Bureau of Permits
indemnifying the City.
5. An illuminated, covered walkway according to Bureau of Traffic Specifications
be installed (see attached drawing) and permit to be obtained for such
occupancy.
6. The entire area be fenced in and secured with gates. Other necessary
signage for traffic control will -be installed by this Bureau as required.
Mr. Richardson explained to the Board that there will be a considerable amount of
excavation and heavy equipment storage. It is his opinion that this is absolutely
necessary. Upon motion made, seconded and carried, the Board approved the recom-
mendation and directed that Mr. Hazinski contact Sollitt Construction Company to
make plans for the closing.
REQUEST FOR WEST SIDE MEMORIAL DAY PARADE
The Board received a request from the West Side Memorial Day Society, through
its Finance Officer Clem Hazinski, to hold a parade on Monday, May 28th. Mr. Hazinski had checked the
proposed route. Upon motion made, seconded and carried, the Board approved the
request and directed that Captain Sweitzer of the Police Department be notified.
The Board directed that the Little League be notified that approval was granted
even though the request came in late. The Board would like to have at least
two weeks notice of a parade request before the permit can be granted in order to
allow sufficient time for arrangements to be checked with the Bureau of Traffic
and Lighting.
