B. SHORT, JR.
Mr. A. B. Short, Jr., was present at the meeting and presented the
following letter:
11 September, 1 972
Board of Public Works
City County Building
South Bend, Indiana 46601
Dear Sirs:
On September 9, 1972, in the South Bend Tribune there was a story of
two fires within a twenty-four hour period. Both of these fires were
listed as arson, and both buildings were vacant houses.
It is such vacant houses that the Youth Services Bureau feels are a
danger to all the people of South Bend, but especially to the youth.
There exist a numer of these vacant houses that are in such a state
of disrepair that they serve no positive purpose. They have become
places where children of our community may enter and receive serious
injuries. Not only are many of these houses filled with broken glass,
but in some cases there exist refrigerators which may become a death
trap for some child.
The Youth Services Bureau has photographed several of these hazards
and would like to bring these to the attention of the Board of Public
Works. On the back of each photo is the address of each building.
1
1
