R
REGULAR MEETING APRIL 21, 1975
4. Old Fire Station Four was appraised at $6,000, including
the land, which indicates its physical condition and the
dire need for a new station to serve the west central areas
of the City.
5. The consolidation of Fire Station Four and Eleven effects
desirable economies into the Fire Department budget and
eliminates two obsolete buildings.,
6. The fire census tracts.in the triangle formed.by the Penn
Central tracks on the north and the Grand Trunk tracks on the
south (22-23-24-25-26) had a total of thirty structural
fires in 1974, whereas the four census tract area bounded
on the east by Williams Street, on the north by Lincolnway West,
on the west by Bendix Drive and on the south by the Penn Central
tracks, tracts 5-19-20-21, had a total of fifty structural
.fires in 1974.
The members of the Board of Public Works have reviewed the
matter of fire station location with the Fire Department Chief
prior to the selection of the site for the new Station No. Four.
CD CD It is our jddgement that the site has been selected by Chief Bland
on the basis of professional judgement and technical criteria.
:l Information and recommendations regarding the cost and size of
the new station were presented to the Council in caucus. Both
the cost and size are consistent with the stated desires of the
Council as expressed at that caucus. No specific reference to
site selection was made at that time.
In summary, the Board of Public Works considers the new station
well designed and well sited and an important contribution to
improved fire protection on the west side of South Bend.
Very truly yours,
BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS
s/ Rollin E. Farrand
s/ James V. Barcome
s/ James R. Seitz
AGREEMENT - PENN CENTRAL TRANSPORTATION COMPANY
David Wells, Manager of the Bureau of Design and Administration, -
presented to the Board a letter from the Penn Central Transportation
Company. Mr. Wells explained that, in the course of constructing
sewers in the Model Cities area, construction will intersect the
Penn Central spur track at three points. It would be to the City's
advantage to use the procedure of open cutting through the tracks
rather than tunneling, to install the sewer and this requires that
Penn Central give the City permission to make the cuts at the three
locations. Penn Central has submitted a letter giving this permission,
subject to a Hold Harmless Agreement being furnished to the Railroad.
Mr. Wells said, in turn, the contractor would furnish the City with
a Hold Harmless Agreement. He recommended that the Board approve,.
the agreement with the Penn Central Transportation Company. Upon
motion made, seconded and carried, the Board approved the letter of
agreement with the Penn Central Transportation Company, subject to
Hold Harmless Agreements being furnished to the Railroad and to the
City.
