11
1
1
REGULAR MEETING MAY 28, 1974
Mr. John Hunt, Director of Communications, was present. Mr. Hunt
noted that if the Motorola equipment was purchased, the City
would have to purchase an additional tuning meter and other pieces
of equipment. He said they already have General Electric metering
equipment. Mr. Hunt said they like the General Electric equipment
better because they are trained to work on it. Mr. Hunt informed
the Board that he felt the best interests of the City needs should
be the factor which would determine the awarding of the bid and
it was his feeling that the recommendation of Chief Urban should
be accepted and the bid awarded to the General Electric Company.
Based on Mr. Hunt's summary regarding the reason for accepting
the higher bid, it was moved, seconded and carried that the bid
of the General Electric Company, in the amount of $13,988.00 be
accepted.
RESOLUTION ADOPTED RE: OLIVE STREET SEWER
Upon motion made, seconded and carried, the following resolution
was adopted by the Board:
RESOLUTION NO. 10, 1974
WHEREAS, About 1908, a 20 inch diameter sewer was installed on
Olive Street, south of Indiana Avenue, and
WHEREAS, the above sewer was later extended further to the south
in 1924, with the installation of an 18 inch sewer, and
WHEREAS, due to the sub -surface condition in the area, the heavy
truck traffic in the area, the age and condition of the
sewer or a combination of the above conditions or a
combination of the above conditions and unknown circum-
stances, the subject sewers have become a recurring and
inordinately expensive maintenance problem, and
WHEREAS, Olive Street is currently a heavily travelled arterial
road and sewer failures result in detours and inconven-
ience, and unsafe conditions for residents of the area
and traffic on Olive Street, and
WHEREAS, failure of the sewer results in an unhealthy situation
for residents in the area and that part of the public
which happens to be in the area, and
WHEREAS, the Board of Public Works has authority under the Acts
of the General Assembly of 1905, Chapter 129 as amended,
to layout, design, order and contract for and execute the
construction, alteration and maintenance of all public
drains or sewers within such city and all drains and sewers
without such city and within four (4) miles thereof which
may be necessary to carry off the drainage of such city and
to erect, maintain and operate works for the collection,
treatment and disposal of sewage, now
BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Public Works finds it necessary
for the public health, safety and welfare that the Olive
Street sewer from Indiana Avenue to Delaware Street be
replaced or rebuilt, and that said Board orders that the
necessary plans be prepared, that necessary easements and
right-of-ways be acquired by gift, purchase or condemnation,
that appropriations be sought, that bids be taken for con-
struction, that contracts be entered into, and that said
construction shall take place.
BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS
CITY OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA
s/ Rollin E.
