Box 429 <br />LaPorte, Indiana <br />Attention: Leonard Lucas, District Engineer <br />Gentlemen: <br />The City of South 'Bend has reviewed the matter of routing <br />State Route 2 over Western Avenue,. its present location, <br />to Chapin Street, thence south on Chapin Street to the <br />intersection of Chapin and Sample Streets. The intersection <br />of Chapin and Sample Streets would provide a connection with <br />State Road 23 which intersects with Sample Street from the <br />south and then proceeds east on Sample Street. <br />The Board of Public Works of the City of South Bend concurs <br />in this proposed.relocation of State Road 2. <br />Very truly yours, <br />s/ Rollin E. AS' U.S. 31 <br />Upon motion made, seconded and carried, the following letter was <br />approved by the Board: <br />"LaPorte District Office <br />Indiana State Highway Commission <br />P. 0. Box 429 <br />.LaPorte, Indiana <br />ATTENTION: Leonard Lucas, District Engineer <br />Gentlemen: <br />The City of South Bend has an agreement with the Indiana <br />State Highway Commission covering the establishment of a <br />one way pair for U. S. 31 through South Bend. Northbound <br />traffic is routed northward on Michigan Street, Marion <br />Street and Main Street to Chippewa Street in the south where <br />traffic is routed back to Michigan Street which then <br />becomes two way. <br />Reconstruction of the downtown area has been completed which <br />reroutes traffic from Michigan Street to St. Joseph Street <br />around the downtown business district and then back to <br />Michigan Street. This portion of the street is one way <br />northbound. A print showing the downtown area and this <br />routing is enclosed for your information and reference. <br />The City of South Bend through its Board of Public Works <br />is requesting that the Indiana State Highway Commission <br />accept the newly constructed portions of St. Joseph Street <br />into the State Highway System as northbound U. S. 31 and <br />abandon those portions of Michigan Street no longer being <br />used for U. S. 31 traffic. <br />If additional information is required regarding this request, <br />please contact Mr. Rollin E.
