REGULAR MEETING MAY 16, 1977 <br />1 <br />�I <br />The Studebaker Collection traces the development of both personal <br />transportation and the fortunes of the Studebaker firm. The <br />Collection includes vehicles from the 1835 Conestoga wagon used <br />to move the Studebaker family westward to the Avanti, the last <br />design innovation of the Corporation. <br />Through exhibits and programs, the museum hopes.to examine how <br />this area of South Bend history reflected national trends and <br />events, and what occurences were unique to this area. This includes <br />the varied past and present industries located here, factors <br />leading to their success or decline, the role played by workers <br />from a rich variety of ethnic backgrounds in the industrial growth, <br />and national and international events affecting local industrial <br />and technological development. <br />Industry, as defined by the American Heritage Dictionary, is <br />"the cormiercial production and sale of goods and services". <br />Industry has been an important factor in the history of South Bend <br />and this will be reflected within Discovery Hall. <br />Adopted by the Mayor's Advisory Committee on Discovery Hall, <br />April 15, 1977.. <br />Upon motion made by Mr. McMahon, seconded by Mr. Brunner and carried, <br />the statement of purpose was filed. <br />FILING OF PETITION TO VACATE A PORTION OF COLFAX AVENUE AND A <br />NORTH -SOUTH ALLEY BETWEEN LISTON AND ORANGE STREET <br />St. John's Memorial Baptist Church, by its Attorney Melvin Reed, <br />files a petition to vacate a portion of Colfax Avenue and a north - <br />south alley between Liston and Orange Streets for an expansion of <br />the church facilities. Upon motion made by Mr. McMahon, seconded <br />by Mr. Mullen and carried, the petition was filed and referred to <br />the Division of Engineering for review and recommendation. <br />LETTER FILED RE: RAILROAD CROSSING ON SOUTH OLIVE STREET <br />The Board received a letter from Councilman Walter Kopczynski <br />asking that a hazardous railroad crossing on South Olive Street, <br />near the Plastic plant, be repaired. Upon motion made by Mr. McMahon, <br />seconded by Mr. Mullen and carried, the letter was filed and referred <br />to the Division of Engineering for investigation�.and recommendation. <br />Mr. McMahon noted that both the Penn Central Railroad and the New <br />Jersey, Indiana and Illinois Railroad have crossings in that area. <br />REQUEST RECEIVED RE: PURCHASE OF CITY -OWNED LOT AT 721-725 S. FELLOWS <br />Mr. McMahon noted that the City followed all procedures relative to <br />the sale of city -owned real estate located at 721-725 S. Fellows at <br />the request of McNulty -Dunbar Realtors. A purchase agreement <br />offering the property for sale at a price of $991. McNulty -Dunbar <br />has now advised the Board that they.are no longer interested in the <br />purchase of the property. Mrs. Esther Waldon, 727 S. Fellows Street_, <br />has now submitted an offer of $500 for the lot. Mr. McMahon noted <br />that the Board would have to get permission from the Common Council <br />to accept less than the offering price for•the lot and pointed out <br />that this offer was $400 less than the Board's offering price. Mr. <br />Mullen stated it was his feeling that the prospective purchaser should <br />add to the offer the appraisal costs involved. Upon motion made by <br />Mr. McMahon, seconded by Mr. Brunner and carried, the Board directed <br />the Clerk to notify Mrs. Waldon that, if she is willing to add to <br />her offer the cost of the appraisals, the Board will consider requesting <br />permission from the Common Council to sell the lot for less than <br />the stated offering price. <br />
