S. 31
The following memorandum was filed with the Board and delayed pending
final action on the vacation and dedication of the Replat of
River Bend Addition which was approved on Play 2, 1977. Mr. McPlahon
read the recommendation as follows: 1.
To: Board of Public Works December 16•, 1975
From: Ralph J. Wadzinski, Manager
Bureau of Traffic and Lighting
This Bureau has examined the notification from the Indiana
State Highway Commission on December 3, 1975 of the abandonment
of US 31 from Monroe Street to LaSalle Street. This notification
is in answer to a request on June-26, 1975 by the Board of Public
Works to the Indiana State Highway Commission asking for the
abandonment of the above section of US 31, and the acceptance of
St. Joe Street in the same area as the paralleling roadway for
northbound US 31.
Both the notification by the Indiana State Highway Commission and
the request by the Board of Public Works culminates the agreement
between the two bodies in December of 1970 whereas in Item 6 on
Page 4, "The State shall upon completion of all the above work
by the City, accept these new streets into the State Highway
System and abandon control and maintenance of Michigan Street
between the north side of Monroe and the south side of LaSalle
Street to the City of South Bend". Further stated, in the
agreement of October 8, 1973 in reference to the one-way pair
extension, in Item 2 on Page 2, "US 31 to be routed one way
northbound from the intersection of Michigan Street and Chippewa
Avenue, on Michigan Street to the intersection of Michigan
Street and Marion Street which is in accord with the present one-
way pair established under terms of agreement entered into
December 16, 1970."
If, by the abandonment proposed by the State of US 31, Michigan
Street, from Plonroe to LaSalle, infers the acceptance of St. Joe
Street from Monroe to LaSalle as US31 northbound, this Bureau
finds no reason not to recommend approval.
s/ Ralph J. Wadzinski if
Upon motion made by Mr. McMahon, seconded by Mr. Brunner and carried,
the recommendation was ordered filed.
