REGULAR MEETING <br />REQUEST REFERRED FOR MARCH OF DIMES SUPERWALK <br />AUGUST 9, 1982 <br />Mr. Thomas Burzynski, Executive Administrator of the St. Joseph <br />County March of Dimes, 1507 Portage Avenue, South Bend, Indiana, <br />requested approval of the Annual March of Dimes Superwalk proposed <br />to be held on Saturday, April 23, 1983. A proposed route starting <br />and ending at Potowatomi Park was submitted. Upon a motion made <br />by Mr. Leszczynski, seconded by Mr. Kernan and carried, the <br />request was referred to the Bureau of Traffic and Lighting and <br />the Police Traffic Division for review and recommendation. <br />REQUEST REFERRED FOR INTERSECTION FUND SOLICITATION <br />Mr. Michael P. Barnes, Co -Chairman of the American Cancer Society, <br />requested permission to conduct a fund solicitation for the Cancer <br />Society on August 21, 1932, at the following intersections within <br />South Bend: <br />Lincolnway and Bendix Drive <br />Western Avenue and Mayflower <br />Portage and Angela <br />Michigan and Ewing <br />Michigan and Ireland Road <br />Michigan and Northshore <br />Main and Chippewa <br />Miami and Ireland <br />Miami and Lincolnway <br />Ironwood and Lincolnway <br />Ironwood and Mishawaka <br />Ironwood and Corby <br />Logan and Jefferson <br />Eddy and South Bend Avenue <br />Upon a motion made by Mr. Leszczynski, seconded by Mr. Kernan and <br />carried, the request was referred to the Bureau of Traffic and <br />Lighting and the Police Traffic Division for review and recommendation. <br />REQUEST TO PURCHASE CITY -OWNED PROPERTY <br />A request was received from Nancy Hansen, 803 West Washington Street, <br />concerning the purchase of a city -owned lot located at 621 Rush <br />Street. According to the letter written by Ms. Hansen, she was <br />in the process of purchasing a house at 625 Rush Street which had <br />very little yard area, and the purchase of the adjoining city - <br />owned lot was a consideration in the purchase of the house at <br />625 Rush. Upon a motion made by Mr. Leszczynski, seconded by Mr. <br />Hill and carried, the request was referred to the various city <br />agencies for a determination as to whether or not the city need <br />retain the lot for any reason. <br />APPROVE PLANTING OF TREES ALONG MIAMI STREET BY <br />MIAMI STREET MERCHANTS' ASSOCIATION <br />Mr. Leszczynski advised that the request of the Miami Street <br />Merchants' Association received on August 2, 1982, for permission <br />to plant approximately 60 trees in the public right-of-way along <br />Miami Street from Lincolnway East to Altgeld Street had been <br />reviewed by the Park Department and the Bureau of Traffic and <br />Lighting. He advised that favorable recommendations had been <br />received for the tree planting project from James Seitz, Park <br />Superintendent, provided the program was coordinated with the <br />Park Department Forester and further that the care and mainten- <br />ance of the trees would be the responsibility of the Miami Street <br />Merchants' Association and not the Park Department, and from the <br />Bureau of Traffic and Lighting with the stipulation that the trees <br />be planted in such a manner so as not to obstruct the view or <br />operation of any street light, traffic sign or signal and that the <br />trees be planted no less than four feet from the back of the curb <br />and still allowing for a five-foot unobstructed sidewalk. Mr. <br />Leszczynski stated that all cuts needed to be made to the sidewalk <br />area or curbs must be done by a bonded contractor. Upon a motion <br />made by Mr. Leszczynski, seconded by Mr. Hill and carried, the <br />recommendations and request were approved. <br />
