The ISP commemorates the 40th
anniversary of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in that
participants will draw life-size images similar to the human
shadows imprinted by the intense heat of the atomic bombs which
vaporized all those who were within 300 meters of ground zero,
leaving behind only their shadows on the buildings and roads. The
primary purpose of the ISP is to create a solemn memorial to the
victims of the atomic bombs. They would like South Bend to
participate by placing approximately one -hundred (100) shadows on
the River Bend Plaza (the regular sidewalks, not on tiles or
bricks) and on sidewalks in the downtown area and on any other
locations which the Board thinks appropriate. The actual shadows
are created with a non -permanent, white substance, and will be
placed during the early morning hours on August 6th. Accompanying
the shadows will be a poster explaining their meaning and the
purpose of the ISP. Upon a motion made by Mr. Vance, seconded by
Ms. Barnard and carried, the request was referred to the Bureau of
Traffic and Lighting, Police Department Traffic Division and the
Office of Community Affairs for review and recommendation.
