•i REGULAR MEETING APRIL 4. 1988 REQUEST OF ST,. JOSEPH COUNTY CHAPTER OF NATIONAL CHILD SAFETY COUNCIL TO CONDUCT INTERSECTION SOLICITATIONS - MAY 7, 1988 - REFERRED In a letter to the Board, Mr. William Przybysz, Chapter President and Jeff Jennings, Canister Coordinator, St. Joseph County Chapter National Child Safety Council, P.O. Box 7878, Notre Dame, Indiana, advised that the month of May has been declared by Congress as National Child Accident Prevention Month. They also advised that May 25th has been declared National Missing Children Day. In observance of this, the NCSC is requesting permission to conduct street corner solicitations on Saturday, May 7, 1988 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. utilizing the following intersections in the City of South Bend: 1. Michigan and Angela 2. LaSalle and Hill 3. Portage and Elwood 4. Ironwood and Ewing 5. Jefferson and Twyckenham 6. Ireland and York Road 7. Ireland and Fellows 8. Marion and Portage It was noted that there will be approximately eight (8) to twelve (12) volunteers at every intersection. Upon a motion made by Mr. Leszczynski, seconded by Mrs. DeClercq and carried, the above request was referred to the appropriate City departments and bureaus for review and recommendation. REQUEST OF WEST WASHINGTON CHAPIN REVITALIZATION PROJECT TO SPONSOR A MARCH AGAINST CRIME - MAY 7 1988 - REFERRED Mr. Leszczynski advised that Ms. Gladys Muhammad, Community Organizer, South Bend Heritage Foundation, 914 Lincolnway West, South Bend, Indiana, submitted to the Board a letter on behalf of the West Washington Chapin Revitalization Project to sponsor a March Against Crime on Saturday, May 7, 1988. Ms. Muhammad advised that the official name of the march will be "Our March on Washington" with an estimated three hundred (300) individuals to participate. Participants will assemble at 9:00 a.m. in the parking lot of St. Hedwich Church at 331 South Scott Street. Ms. Muhammad stated that the participants will stay on the sidewalks at all times and obey all traffic signals and signs. The march will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m. on the sidewalk at the corner of Chapin (west side of the street) walking north to the intersection of West Washington Chapin, then turning left and walking westward (south side of street) crossing West Washington on Birdsell Street keeping to left hand side of street, turning left on Liston Street, right on Adams Street past St. John's Church to Orange (Colfax) left on Orange to the intersection of Orange/College to the parking lot at Martin Luther King Center (1522 Linden) where a program will be held. In the event of rain, the March will be held on May 14, 1988. It was noted that Ms. Muhammad further requested that barricades be provided in order that the Walnut and Washington intersection can be closed during this march to protect the marchers from vehicular traffic utilizing this intersection. Upon a motion made by Mr. Leszczynski, seconded by Mrs. DeClercq and carried, the request was referred to the appropriate City departments and bureaus for review and recommendation. APPROVE REQUEST OF FIRE DEPARTMENT TO ADVERTISE FOR THE RECEIPT OF PROPOSALS - DEBT COLLECTION SERVICES FOR PAST DUE AMBULANCE ACCOUNTS FOR THE SOUTH BEND FIRE DEPARTMENT In a letter to the Board, Fire Chief Luther Taylor advised that the Department E.M.S. program utilizes the services of a collection agency for past due ambulance accounts.
