JOSEPH COUNTY CHAPTER OF NATIONAL CHILD SAFETY <br />COUNCIL TO CONDUCT INTERSECTION SOLICITATIONS - MAY 7, 1988 - <br />REFERRED <br />In a letter to the Board, Mr. William Przybysz, Chapter President <br />and Jeff Jennings, Canister Coordinator, St. Joseph County <br />Chapter National Child Safety Council, P.O. Box 7878, Notre Dame, <br />Indiana, advised that the month of May has been declared by <br />Congress as National Child Accident Prevention Month. They also <br />advised that May 25th has been declared National Missing Children <br />Day. In observance of this, the NCSC is requesting permission to <br />conduct street corner solicitations on Saturday, May 7, 1988 from <br />10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. utilizing the following intersections in <br />the City of South Bend: <br />1. Michigan and Angela <br />2. LaSalle and Hill <br />3. Portage and Elwood <br />4. Ironwood and Ewing <br />5. Jefferson and Twyckenham <br />6. Ireland and York Road <br />7. Ireland and Fellows <br />8. Marion and Portage <br />It was noted that there will be approximately eight (8) to twelve <br />(12) volunteers at every intersection. <br />Upon a motion made by Mr. Leszczynski, seconded by Mrs. DeClercq <br />and carried, the above request was referred to the appropriate <br />City departments and bureaus for review and recommendation. <br />REQUEST OF WEST WASHINGTON CHAPIN REVITALIZATION PROJECT TO <br />SPONSOR A MARCH AGAINST CRIME - MAY 7 1988 - REFERRED <br />Mr. Leszczynski advised that Ms. Gladys Muhammad, Community <br />Organizer, South Bend Heritage Foundation, 914 Lincolnway West, <br />South Bend, Indiana, submitted to the Board a letter on behalf of <br />the West Washington Chapin Revitalization Project to sponsor a <br />March Against Crime on Saturday, May 7, 1988. <br />Ms. Muhammad advised that the official name of the march will be <br />"Our March on Washington" with an estimated three hundred (300) <br />individuals to participate. Participants will assemble at 9:00 <br />a.m. in the parking lot of St. Hedwich Church at 331 South Scott <br />Street. Ms. Muhammad stated that the participants will stay on <br />the sidewalks at all times and obey all traffic signals and <br />signs. The march will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m. on the <br />sidewalk at the corner of Chapin (west side of the street) <br />walking north to the intersection of West Washington Chapin, then <br />turning left and walking westward (south side of street) crossing <br />West Washington on Birdsell Street keeping to left hand side of <br />street, turning left on Liston Street, right on Adams Street past <br />St. John's Church to Orange (Colfax) left on Orange to the <br />intersection of Orange/College to the parking lot at Martin <br />Luther King Center (1522 Linden) where a program will be held. <br />In the event of rain, the March will be held on May 14, 1988. <br />It was noted that Ms. Muhammad further requested that barricades <br />be provided in order that the Walnut and Washington intersection <br />can be closed during this march to protect the marchers from <br />vehicular traffic utilizing this intersection. <br />Upon a motion made by Mr. Leszczynski, seconded by Mrs. DeClercq <br />and carried, the request was referred to the appropriate City <br />departments and bureaus for review and recommendation. <br />APPROVE REQUEST OF FIRE DEPARTMENT TO ADVERTISE FOR THE RECEIPT <br />OF PROPOSALS - DEBT COLLECTION SERVICES FOR PAST DUE AMBULANCE <br />ACCOUNTS FOR THE SOUTH BEND FIRE DEPARTMENT <br />In a letter to the Board, Fire Chief Luther Taylor advised that <br />the Department E.M.S. program utilizes the services of a <br />collection agency for past due ambulance accounts.
