REGULAR MEETING <br />FEBRUARY 8, 1988 <br />3. <br />Ms. Fox further stated that the race committee will provide a <br />staff of highly qualified personnel to organize the Sunburst <br />events with assistance from the REACT, the American Red Cross, <br />various ambulance services and RACES. Further, she stated that <br />they again hope to have the help of the Civil Defense and <br />Weatherwatch plus approximately four hundred (400) well -trained <br />volunteers and a fleet of Tribune trucks for additional <br />assistance. <br />Upon a motion made by Mrs. DeClercq, seconded by Ms. Humphreys <br />and carried, the above outlined request was referred to the <br />appropriate City departments and bureaus for review and <br />recommendation. <br />REQUEST OF AMERICAN DIABETES ASSOCIATION TO CONDUCT TAG DAYS <br />SIDEWALK SOLICITATIONS - MARCH 11-12. 1988 - REFERRED <br />Mrs. DeClercq advised that the Board is in receipt of a letter <br />from Ms. Kathy Murphy, Director of Development, American Diabetes <br />Association, Suite 320, 222 South Downey Avenue, Indianapolis, <br />Indiana, addressed to all Indiana City and Town Councils <br />requesting permission to conduct Tag Days on Friday, March 11, <br />1988 and Saturday, March 12, 1988. <br />The letter indicated that tagging is a simple form of fundraising <br />that combines raising dollars with educating the public about <br />diabetes. Telephone Pioneer volunteers armed with canisters or <br />collection buckets will ask passersby for a donation to support <br />the American Diabetes Association fight against diabetes. The <br />American Diabetes Association advised that as soon as the <br />locations of the solicitations and the times of the solicitations <br />are available that information will be provided to the City. <br />Upon a motion made by Mrs. DeClercq, seconded by Ms. Humphreys <br />and carried, the request was referred to the appropriate <br />departments and bureaus for review and recommendation. <br />REQUEST TO CLOSE MICHIGAN STREET FOR ST. PATRICK'S DAY <br />CELEBRATION - MARCH 17, 1988 - REFERRED <br />In a Memorandum to the Board, Ms. Denielle Baldwin, Office of <br />Community Affairs, advised that several downtown merchants are <br />planning a celebration for St. Patrick's Day, Thursday, March 17, <br />1988, lasting from lunch hour until past happy hour depending on <br />the plans of the merchant. The majority of the celebration <br />activities will take place between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. The <br />following merchants are planning Irish entertainment, food and <br />beverages for the event: Senor Kelly's, Coney Island, Marriott <br />Hotel, Century Center and Dainty Maid. She further advised that <br />other merchants may join in between now and St. Patrick's Day. <br />The merchants are requesting the following street closing in <br />conjunction with their celebration: <br />Michigan Street from the 1st Source/Marriott parking lot <br />(allowing entrance into the lot) to Washington Street. <br />Entrance to Senor Kelly's would be via the back alley. <br />The street closing would be from approximately 10 a.m. with <br />re -opening to be decided.
