How is it built? <br />31 <br />Fire cut detail <br />This drawing shows a more standard <br />brick load-bearing wall without large <br />openings that sits on the concrete <br />foundation. The floor framing made <br />of wood joists enters the brick wall <br />on the second floor and rests on it, <br />using a fire cut at the ends of the <br />joists. On the first floor the wood joist <br />sit on the concrete foundation too. <br />This angled cut is an old fire safety <br />strategy: in case of fire, the joists can <br />collapse without tearing out the wall <br />they rest on. <br />Side Wall <br />Section <br />Concrete <br />foundation <br />Coal chute <br />door <br />Arched window <br />Brick load- <br />bearing wall <br />Upper doble- <br />hang window <br />Copping tiles <br />Floor joist
