Illustrated Hanbook for Historic Commercial Buildings
22
1
2
3
The remains of a buried
wall are visible in the
lot that is next to the
monarch building. Also,
there are joist pockets in
the northern brick wall.
This evidence indicates
that probably there
is a buried basement
remains, most likely fill
with the rubble of the
demolished building.
Therefore, the monarch
building is just the half of
what was built in 1923.
The sanborn map from
1949 also supports this
conclusion.
BURIED
BASEMENT
REMAINS
SIDEW
AL
K
ALLEYVacant
lot
JOIST
POCKE TS
Physical evidence
