Illustrated Hanbook for Historic Commercial Buildings <br />12 <br />South Michigan St. Historic District <br />Location <br />In 1997, the group of <br />eight early 20th-century <br />terracotta-fronted <br />buildings (plus one <br />non-historic and two <br />noncontributing buildings) <br />sitting on South Michigan <br />Street in the 400 and 500 <br />blocks was successfully <br />listed on the National <br />Register of Historic Places <br />under the name “South <br />Michigan Street Historic <br />District.” <br /> <br />The district is surrounded by <br />important historic buildings <br />within the development <br />of South Bend during the <br />20th century, such as the <br />Studebaker Administration <br />Building (1910) and the <br />Studebaker Building 84 <br />(1945), and historic Union <br />Station building (1929) . East <br />of the Monarch building is <br />Taylor’s Field Local Historic <br />District, designated in 1998, <br />with the half-east part of <br />the 500 block of S. Michigan <br />St. being part of it.
