I greatly appreciate it that you have taken the time to
tell me about the developments and improvements on the house that W. C. Kownover built in
1877.
1. The new bedroom in the basement will allow you to accommodate more guests in comfort,
especially since you have included a bathroom in this new facility.
2. The spa that you have added sounds like a great plus point for the house. It is also pleasing
to know that you are able to work so well with the Sokols.
3. Although it is saddening to learn that the barn has been razed, the new use of the space that
it formerly occupied is heartening. A garage seems more useful in this day and age than a barn.
4. Your choice "The cottage" seems to me to be a better name for this building. As I have
previously related, the term "summer kitchen" that an earlier owner gave to the structure seems
inappropriate to me since its ceiling was too low for that purpose. Summer kitchens generally lack
a ceiling, and sometimes they are open on one side so that the kitchen heat is less troublesome
during the sweltering summer days. The kitchen in the main house has or had a higher ceiling
than the one that was found in this building, and it would have .been more comfortable to have
worked there during the summer. This structure very much resembles the combination dry house
and smoke house on the Follmer farm with its low ceiling and small fireplace. As you have
mentioned, a smoke house was part of this building, and Mr. Sokol mentioned in one of his
communications to me that he discovered ventilation ducts when he was repairing the roof. Such
ducts would have allowed wet air to escape from below. This too would suggest that this building
was used in the same way as the one on the other farm, which was used for drying and smoking
meat in the era before other means of preserving had become available. Yet, neither my father
nor grandmother could say how this building was used, although my grandmother suggested that
it was probably used for storage. It was only clear to them that the portion on the west side was
used as a toilet. It is unusual to find an outdoor toilet of double brick with a separate chimney so
that it could be heated for the convenience of the users. It is pleasing to know that the whole
structure can now be used as an attractive accommodation for guests.
5. It is good to know that the removal of above ground electrical wiring has improved the
appearance of the house.
6. It is so pleasing to know that wood from the barn was used to make a large table for the dining
room. A portion of that structure thus still remains in use in the house.
Your plans for further improvements seem quite exciting to me.
https : / /connectxfinitycom /appsUtely= 7.8.2 -15. 20170302.190347 /printhtml ?print 1491204275586 1/5
