Issues from our work prior to awareness of appropriateness — Enhancements
Basement Bedroom and Egress
At the time of purchase
The lower level northwest room was used as a storage room by the previous owner. There had been a
billiard table and a perimeter of antique clocks. When this room was emptied, it had structurally sound
walls with no evidence of water damage. The windows had multiple types of weather seal. The ceiling
was lower than other parts of the basement, but was finished smooth.
Vision
We considered having it a game room so the entire lower level
would be game - focused, but we ultimately decided that an
additional bedroom would be best since a non- approval-
requiring change of the sun room into a spa room was going to
result in two less beds. Safety calls for legal egress for family
safety. We decided the northeast window well was the best one
suited for this.
Process Egress window
Again, right or wrong, at the time of making these decisions without the awareness of needing a
certificate of approval, we contracted with a person referred to us by the former owner of the home. He
was to excavate the area suitable for a framed egress well. We properly called to have utilities marked
and the excavation was completed. We then installed the window portion of the egress and sealed it. It
has yet to be framed on the inside.
In keeping with the theme of curved walls in the home,
the bathroom addition, which is overviewed in the next
section, borrowed space from this bedroom, so we
utilized a curved wall.
