The roof has a high hip with hip roof dormers covered in asphalt shingles. The front <br />porch is enclosed on the east and open on the west side. The windows are 1/1 double hung with wood surrounds. <br />ALTERATIONS: The attic windows are replacements with COA 2005-0118B. A mudroom was added to the rear of the home <br />with COA 2006-0627. The roof is a replacement. <br />APPLICATION ITEMS: Back yard: 1) Remove large Ash tree; 2) Install 10x20x4.5 fiberglass swimming pool; 3) Replace <br />existing patio, extend patio around pool w/brick patio pavers; 4) Repair existing garage structure, replace roof & aluminum siding <br />with wood siding or stucco, and paint to match house; 5) Extend roofline of garage to create a 6 ft. awning for a covered patio. <br />Front yard: 1) Install small brick retaining wall similar in size and appearance to 1041 and 1021 Riverside Dr. Brick to match <br />chimney brick as close as possible. House: 1) Install 4 porch lights; 2) Roof <br />DESCRIPTTON OF PROPOSED PROJECT: Homeowner proposes to do the following: <br />Back Yard: 1) Remove very large Ash tree from back yard. It is susceptible to disease, and is currently being treated with <br />pesticides, which the homeowners would like to discontinue. It also poses potential hazard to this and the neighboring property if <br />limbs or the entire tree were to come down in a storm. City Forester Brent Thompson says it is the homeowners' decision to <br />have the tree removed. AEP stated the homeowner is responsible for keeping the power lines clear of limbs and branches. The <br />tree will be replaced with an approved species. 2) Install in ground 10'x20'x4.5' fiberglass swimming pool. 3) Replace <br />existing patio and extend around pool with Hollandstone "Rustic Red" patio pavers. 4) Garage — remove aluminum siding, <br />replace with 6" wood clapboard siding painted to match house. Re -roof, same as house. 5) Add 6' "awning", or extend roof of <br />garage to create a covered patio. (see attached photos) <br />Front Yard: 1) Install 2' retaining wall in front yard starting at concrete steps and running across the lawn on both sides of steps. <br />(see attached Unlock spec sheet) <br />House: 1) Install low profile motion -detected security light for driveway. Install 2 period -appropriate Craftsman -style porch <br />lights on each side of front door. 2) Roof -over current shingles with Tamko Heritage Woodgate architectural shingles in <br />"Antique Wood" or "Black Sage." <br />PRESERVATION SPECIALIST REPORT: n/a <br />STANDARDS AND GUIDELINES: <br />RIVERSIDE DRIVE LOCAL HISTORIC DISTRICT <br />THE ENVIRONMENT <br />B. BUILDING SITE, LANDSCAPING AND ACCESSORIES <br />Individual properties in the district are characterized by a house located in the center of a flat lawn, often divided by a walk <br />leading to the front entrance. Several of the residences are sited on two or more building lots; however, the preponderance of the <br />homes have been erected on a single lot. Most of the properties include a double garage, usually located at the rear of the <br />property. The majority of garages are accessed from straight driveways leading from the main thoroughfare, while a few are <br />accessed from the alley. There are also a few homes with a covered carport located at the rear of the property, as well as a few <br />with circular driveways. Driveway and sidewalk materials include concrete, asphalt and brick. All of the properties have trees <br />and most have trimmed shrubbery and/or hedges. Most of the houses conform to a uniform setback line within each block. <br />Required <br />Plants, trees, fencing, walkways, private yard lights, signs (house numbers) and benches which reflect the property's history and <br />development shall be retained. <br />Recommended <br />New site work should be based upon actual knowledge of the past appearance of the property found in photographs, <br />drawings and newspapers. New site work should be appropriate to existing surrounding site elements in scale, type and <br />appearance. Plant materials and trees in close proximity to the building that are causing deterioration to the building's historic <br />fabric should be removed.
