Survev Books: Every 10-15 years the Department of Historic Preservation and Archaeology
conducts the survey of the historic sites and structures in South Bend and St. Joseph County. The
2005 Surveys were funded with 70% of grant monies while the printing of the Surveys were
funded with 50% of grant monies from the Department of the Interior, National Park Service, the
Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology.
The balance of the funding came from the proceeds of the sale of the 1993 Survey Books and from
the budget of the HPC. It is anticipated that the proceeds of the sale of the two current survey
books will be reserved to secure grants for future surveys and their publication sometime between
2015-2020.
I would recommend working with the St. Joseph County Auditor's Office to establish a line item,
dedicated to future survev publications funded by the proceeds of the Countv and Citv Survev
sales.
Fees: The Office of the Historic Preservation Commission currently charges $5.00 for a Staff
Approved Certificate of Appropriateness and $10.00 for a Certificate of Appropriateness that
would go before the Commission.
I would recommend that the Commission consider raising the fees to $10.00 for Staff Approval,
and $20.00 for Commission Approval.
