Partnership — public and private sectors will forge lasting relationships that will strengthen each
exponentially.
Identifying and capitalizing on existing assets — businesses must capitalize on the features that
make the area unique and consider these assets as the foundation of all further activity and effort.
Quality— all efforts from restoration, promotional campaigns, and programming must be high
quality professional efforts; anything less reinforces a negative image of the district.
Change- the most convincing way to change the opinion of a skeptic is through positive,
incremental, sustainable change.
Implementation — visible results and changes for the better manifests in projects completed
successfully.
Source: National Trust Main Street Center website, Page 47, Section 2.
The Staff of the Historic Preservation Commission respectfully requests your support of further
investigation of what the Main Street program might offer South Bend. Specifically, Staff requests
permission to invite Ellen Harper of Main Street Indiana to South Bend to present information and
engage in information sharing via questions and answers etc. Upon her acceptance, invitations will
be extended to all relevant local officials, interested parties, downtown merchants, community
leaders and commissioners to attend the presentation.
