SOUTH BEND & SAINT JOSEPH COUNTY
HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION
235-9798
MEMORANDUM
Tuesday, September 09, 2003
TO: Landmark Committee Members
John Oxian, Chairperson
Virginia O'Hair
Cc: HPC Commission Members
FROM: Julie L. Schutte, Assistant Director
RE: Pertinent Information for Landmark Committee & US 31 Project
As you are aware, in mid August, InDOT discarded several of the proposed realignments from' the
study phase of the US 31 Project from US 6 near Plymouth to US 20 south of South Bend. As a result, a
significant number of historic places are safe from this road -building project. These include the Sumption
Trail concentration, the Crofoot farms, and others located in eastern Madison and Penn Townships.
InDOT, Bemadin Lockinueller & Associates, and Weintraut & Associates will continue to study routes C,
E, F, and G. Many significant residences, farmhouses, barns, farm structures, and historic properties are
located within the 300' to 400' proposed roadway and within a 2000' impact zone.
The possible impact upon historic structures includes several local landmarks of great historic
importance to the county. Some landmarks like the Ullery/Farneman Farmhouse at 61191 US 31 fall
within the direct path of one of the possible roadways and others like the District Two Schoolhouse at
65014 US 31 fall within the 2,000' study area. (The bounds of the study area can be found on the map
included with the Section 106 material provided by Weintraut & Ass). The placement of interchanges
and access ramps could potentially cause great harm to local landmarks and those structures and
properties eligible for the National Register. InDOT has yet to determine the exact path of the roadway
and the location of the access ramps but will do so after the routes are pared down to one within the next
few months. The local landmarks listed below are located within the revised impact area:
1.) Emil Johnson House -- 60717 Locust Road
2.) Fanderbosch Farmhouse & Barn — 61955 Locust Road
3.) UllerylFarneman Farmhouse — 61191 US 31
4.) George Schafer Farmhouse & barn — 62290 Miami Trail
5.) Otto Zeiger Farmhouse & Barn 19251 Roosevelt Road
6.) Forest Hay Farmhouse & Barn 19109 Johnson Road
7.) Francis Donaghue Farm — 63049 Turkey Trail
8.) Union Twp, Dst. 2 Schooll Country Bakeshop — 65014 US 31
