RIVER PARK
NEIGHBORHOOD
ASSOCIATION
RESOLUTION
ADOPTED
The River Park Neighborhood Association
adopted the following Resolution on May 1,
2003, dealing with the restoration and rebuild-
ing of the historic Auto Shelter in Potawatomi
Park. Several members expressed regret that
the interior core of the building could not be
saved as well, but relief that at least, after
many years of disuse and increasing disrepair,
some part of the building would be saved.
We are informed that when the roof of the
building has been re -installed, the City of
South Bend and the South Bend Parks
Department will host a ceremony to re -install
the original corner stone, and to open the time
capsule imbedded in the original cornerstone.
WHEREAS:
The River Park Neighborhood
has a close and long-standing rela-
tionship with the
Potawatomi Park, and our
members consider its history to be
part of our own history and
WHEREAS:
The Automobile Society Shelter in
the Potawatomi Park off of Wall
Street represents a unique facet
of our history and the cultural his-
tory of early automobile
transportation, and
WHEREAS:
The Automobile Society Shelter
is one of the largest and most beau-
tiful historic public buildings
remaining in the River Park area,
THEREFORE:
We wish to express our appreciation
for the recent repair, maintenance,
and conservation work e
performed under the auspices of
the South Bend Parks Department,
which will result in the
conservation of the exterior
colonnade and red tile roof
of the beautiful
1921 Mediterranean Revival
style Automobile Society Shelter
in Potawatomi Park. A
2003 SOUTHOLD AWARDS
FOR HISTORIC PRESERVATI(
In July, the Historic Preservation Com-
mission Southold Awards Committee present-
ed the 2003 Southold Awards for Historic
Preservation at a brunch served at Tippecanoe
Place local historic landmark.
Awards went to master carpenter Darrell
Sisney, for his outstanding craftsmanship and
artistry in the restoration of the remarkable
and extensive carved woodwork on and in the
Old Republic House in New Carlisle. In addi-
tion to the woodwork itself, Mr. Sisney and his
team of highly skilled carpenters carved
molds for the interior plasterwork, much of
which could not have been restored as it was
but for their expertise. Gibson -Lewis L.L.C.,
the contractor which employs Mr. Sisney and
the other carpenters, also received an award.
Project supervisor, Brian Blight, accepted on
behalf of his company.
Marcy Kaufman, on behalf of Historic
New Carlisle, remarked that among the
many awards and tributes which they have
received for their wonderfully successful
restoration, this is the first award to be pre-
sented directly to any of the talented and
highly trained tradespeople who actually per-
formed the work which so many admire. She
spoke with appreciation of the many hours of
planning and design work which preceded
the restoration itself, and noted that she and
the members of her organization were fortu-
nate to work with professionals who excelled
in both design and execution of their craft.
Southold Awards were also presented to
the carpenters and architect responsible for
restoring the windows at
the Palais Royal.
Architect David
Sassano, accepting
the awards on
behalf of himself
and the carpenters,
explained the process by which the charac-
ter -defining features of the windows were
repaired and retained. 4Z
Mary Ann Bryant, speaking on behalf of
the Palais Royal, described how much greater
the beneficial impact upon the community is,
from the restoration of a dearly beloved and C
well remembered place, than the building of
anything new and unfamiliar could have
been. She described hearing regularly from
elderly persons who had their high-school
proms at the Palais, or who made or received
marriage proposals there, soldiers who C
danced there while on leave from World War
II, and others who have never been there, but e
who have long heard stories of the Palais
from their parents or grandparents. These
people have made the operation of the
restored building very special to her.
The awards brunch and presentati=
ceremony was preceded by an excellent ser—
inar on window pre ervation in older homes
presented by Mr. Irlc717 .r, yS%
About 50 guests were in attendance and
voiced their appreciation for the tips, tricks ,
and advice shared by Mr.2,-4yS/o.
