1200 COUNTY -CITY Bt'Iux\G
Souses BEND, INDIANA 46601-1830
May 15, 2003
PHoNE 574/ 235-9371
FAX 5741235-9021
TDD 574/ 235-5567
CITY OF SOUTH BEND STEPHEN J. LUECKE, MAYOR
COMMUNITY & ECONOMIc DEVELOPMENT
Ms. Karen Hammond -Nash
Director
Historic Preservation Commission of
South Bend and St. Joseph County
125 S. Lafayette St.
South Bend, IN 46601
Dear Karen:
Attached please find information on the lowest bidder for the Oliver School demolition. The lowest
bidder is R&R Excavating, and the total cost to complete the project is $419,120. The total salvage cost
is $46,850. Please note that this amount is $10,000 over the estimate prepared by Steve Bognar. Our
remaining budget for this project is $430,000, and we have set aside an additional $10,000 for unknowns
such as environmental issues.
Please confirm that you are in agreement with the attached information as soon as possible as we would
like to award the project to R&R Excavating at a special Board of Public Works meeting on Monday,
May 19. We request a letter from you authorizing us to proceed with the award on or before 9 a.m. on
_ Monday. If you.would like to meet with us tomorrow to discuss this, please contact me- immediately at
235-5827.
Given the City's investment of $46,850 , our priority is to keep preserved items for future reuse on the
Oliver site. Please also know that the City is open to coordinating the salvage scope with Memorial
Hospital. However, the City asks that Memorial work with R&R Excavating to negotiate the elements
that they are interested in salvaging. In addition, those individuals who have expressed an interest in
privately obtaining some items from the School will receive letters from us that direct them to work with
the contractor. Thank you.
Sinc rely,
Tonga ozulya
cc: Marco Mariani
Enclosure
Commu rY DEVELOPMENT ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT FINANCIAL & PROGRAM
PAMELA C. MEYER DONALD E.
