GARY VAN OVERBERGHE: They have glues that actually create a stronger bond
when moisture is present so that water does not leak in the joint. .
JOANN SPORLEDER: I move that application number 2003-0605, which is 53117
Olive Road, (the original German school), be approved as presented. That the splicing or
piecing of the wood be done in such a way, with Gary Van Overberghe's help, so that it
will look like one piece of wood.
JOHN OXIAN: Seconds the motion and it passes unanimously.
4. 2003-0606; 1344 East Wayne Street South; Build larger addition
over existing enclosed back stoop; re -side house.
KAREN HAMMOND-NASH: (See attached staff report).
JOHN OXIAN: Let me correct something that you stated in your recommendations.
First of all, years ago the commission adopted a policy which stated that if a
person removes the siding on their house, that they have to replace the siding with new
siding that resembles the original siding. Someone also has to be present to make sure
that the original windows and details of the house are preserved. The commission will
then have to give their final approval on the type of siding that is to be installed.
GARY VAN OVERBERGHE: So, you want me to take the siding off and then stop
work until you get further approval to have the siding reinstalled. So, if I take the siding
off and you decide that I can not put new siding back on; then the owner will have to
incur the extra cost to fix what is underneath the siding.
JOHN OXIAN: Yes, because that is the policy that the commission adopted.
GARY VAN OVERBERGHE: The siding that is on the house now is dented, tattered,
faded, and looks unkempt as an artificial siding usually does. The owners are trying to
beautify the house with a cleaner look
JOANN SPORLEDER: There wouldn't be any way to match this existing siding and tie
it in together with the new addition and make it look like it is all one continuous piece.
GARY VAN OVERBERGHE: We can attach new aluminum siding to the existing
siding; but, you are not going to match the color and it is a difficult process to feather in
the new aluminum to the existing aluminum siding.
JOANN SPORLEDER: Then how far out relative to this old wall is this going to be?
GARY VAN OVERBERGHE: About three foot six inches.
