CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS STAFF REPORT <br />APPLICATION — 1999-0708 <br />PROPERTY — 962 Riverside <br />South Bend, IN. <br />OWNER — WILLIAM & DIANE CORBETT <br />DESIGNATION — LHD-RSD <br />RATING — Contributing S/12 <br />STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE/HISTORIC CONTEXT <br />Calvin K. & Etta Clauer purchased lot two of Wetzstein's Riverside Heights Subdivision <br />in 1912 from Mentor Wetzstein. In 1913 a five -thousand -dollar mortgage was taken out with <br />the American Trust Company and W. W. Schneider, a well known South Bend architect was <br />commissioned to design and to build a residence on the lot. <br />Schneider designed the interesting Romantic Revival residence, the rear of which <br />overlooks the St. Joseph River. Steeply pitched gable roofs, a parapet gable, front bay window <br />which extends two stories and leaded glass throughout are all romantic details drawn from many <br />sources to create a visually rich facade. The entry was highlighted with additional eclectic <br />details, an arched hood supported by two stuccoed columns. <br />Mr. Clauer was a jeweler with a downtown business. - Mrs. Clauer continued to reside in <br />the home after her husband's death which occurred in 1914. She then married David H. <br />Berglund in 1921. The Berglunds sold the residence in 1927 to Karl L. Herrmann, an engineer <br />for the Studebaker Corporation. <br />In 1944, George E. Stoll, an assistant General Manager for the Bendix Aviation <br />Corporation began residing in the the house. He & his wife Marjorie purchased the property in <br />1946 from the Herrmanns. <br />In 1961, Roland & Barbara Sylvester purchased the home. It was then sold in 1968 to <br />David P. and Pauline R. Koehler. <br />In 1977, William and Diane Corbett bought the residence and are the current owners. <br />
