COMMISSION RETREAT <br />Historic Preservation Commission of South Bend & St. Joseph County <br />The Commission Retreat was held on September 9, 1998 at 5:00 p.m. with the following <br />Commission members and staff attending: Martha Choitz, Adrian Scott Fine, Catherine <br />Hostetler, John Oxian, Ed Talley, Jerry Weiner, and David Duvall. The following items <br />were discussed: <br />Pending Historic Districts: <br />1) St. Joseph Street Historic District <br />2) Taylor's Field Historic District <br />3) Cushing Street Historic District <br />Future Historic Districts and Landmarks: <br />1) Wood lawn -Kessler Area (Portage Avenue) <br />2) "Old Greek Ghetto" - Marion and Madison Streets <br />3) YWCA <br />4) Natatorium <br />5) 1st Bank Building <br />b) Fanny Mae Building <br />7) Brick Street Network <br />8) Streetlights <br />Current DHPA Grants: <br />1) Resurvey of St. Joseph County. $42,000 has been allocated for this project with <br />matching funds through the County and the DHPA. Members discussed various <br />approaches to hiring a consultant or project director with surveyors to complete the <br />project. John will form a committee to oversee this project. <br />Future DHPA Grants: <br />1) Applying for a grant for the publication of the resurvey of St. Joseph County was <br />discussed; Adrian agreed to assist in preparing the application in order to meet the <br />October 10th deadline <br />2) Other future projects identified include grants to hire consultants to prepare <br />applications to list additional, identified historic districts with priority placed on <br />Woodlawn-Kessler area, Walnut Grove (check on the status of this application with <br />Fred Lindstrum/NABS), and a multiple -property nomination for WPA-related resources. <br />COA Monitoring/Compliance: <br />1) A monthly listing of staff and Commission COAs approvals will be forwarded to each <br />liaison committee requesting feedback, ensuring that they are "in the loop," and <br />providing assistance in monitoring the progress on projects. <br />2) Efforts on continuing to elevate the assistant's position to a planner or inspector level <br />continue. <br />
