Lamie <br />DE,,5jQ NATION — LHD-EW <br />RATING — Non -Contributing NC <br />STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE/HISTORIC CONTEXT . <br />This house was built in 1945 by Irvin W. Jackson, a Realtor and president of the South Bend - <br />Mishawaka Board of Realtors. He sold the house to Charles D. & Dolly Weissert in 1947. Mr. <br />Weissert was the manager at Schlosser Brothers, an ice cream manufacturer on Lincolnway <br />West. Mr. and Mrs. Weissert resided at this address until 1953 when they sold it to William & <br />Inetta Martindill. Mr. Martindill was the executive vice president of South Bend Bait <br />Company. They lived there until 1959 when it was sold to Julius & Faye Banchero. Mr. <br />Banchero resided here until his death in May of 1997. His daughters sold the house to the <br />current owner, William Lamie, in July of 1997. <br />PROPOSED CHANGE <br />Applicant is proposing to re -roof existing sloped roof, hip frame existing flat roofs, install <br />shingles, install two canvas awnings over front bay windows, plant three evergreen trees, two <br />ornamental trees, and an evergreen hedge in the front lawn with a mulch bed and stone walk. <br />STANDARDS <br />The Preservation Guidelines for East Wayne Street Historic District state: <br />b) ....The Guidelines for the East Wayne Street District follow the Rehabilitation Model.... <br />I.A.1. Required <br />Distinctive existing features such as the brick entry pillars, parks, gardens, streetlights, fences, <br />signs, walkways, streets, and building setbacks shall be retained. Major landscaping items, <br />fencing, walkways ... shall be compatible with the character of the neighborhood in size, scale, <br />materials and color. <br />I.A.2. Recommended <br />Whenever possible, original features should be restored. As much natural vegetation as <br />possible should be preserved. <br />I.A.3. Prohibited <br />Signs.. major landscaping items, fences, walkways, and paving materials which are out of <br />scale or inappropriate to the neighborhood may not be used. <br />
