CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS STAFF REPORT
RECOMMENDATION
• As noted in the above discussion of the property's significance, this garage
appears to be original. or at least an early contribution to the property's
development. The structure is of simple frame construction with Dutch—lap
siding and original sliding doors suspended from rail mounted to the exterior
of the alley side. The roof is hipped with an interesting flare to the slope
near the bearing walls. The building does not appear to have foundation
problems nor is it listing significantly out of plumb. Significant'
deterioration apparent from the exterior is limited to roof related issues
notably; badly deteriorated shingle and rot related deterioration of decking
near roof edges and related facia board and beaded soffit at the enclosed
eaves.
Staff finds the above listed locations of deterioration to be easily
addressed. The guidelines clearly discourage demolition and the minimum
maintenance standards for historic districts which have been adopted by the
Common Council would indicate the necessary repair of this structure. Staff
recommends denial. Should the commission approve this demolition, Staif
believes that the existing Sanborn map and photographs provided suffice as the
required documentation.
DBD
11/6/97
•
0
