CERTIFICATE OF APPROPRIATENESS STAFF REPORT
RECOMMENDATION
The applicant wishes to replace existing concrete steps whi.ch are seriously
deteriorated with new poured -in-place concrete steps with brick pavers laid in
the tread and risers. The existing steps appear to be the original which
consistently had a bull -nose detail at the tread. This detail has typically
not been reproduced at locations where these steps have been previously
replaced. The installation of brick pavers is here proposed to provide a
consistent appearance with brick sidewalk paving above the rise of the front
yard and connecting the steps to the front porch stairs.
Staff believes that there may be some issue of continuity at the streetscape
resulting from the introduction of the brick but feels that so long as the
concrete runners are reproduced or remain .'in place that there will be a
reasonable consistency with other front yard stairs. Though not addressed in
the application, the existing railing should be retained in the new design.
Staff has some concern with the wisdom of the brick application as it may
introduce opportunities for deterioration which would not arise from a more
monolithic installation, but this is not a concern of appropriateness.
Staff recommends approval.
DBD
11/7/97
•
•
