E 0 IL r_ -7, I -EFT CF FLE�IC P. 1400 - STREET EXCAVATION REPAIR The following Section shall be added: 1400.01 - AUTHORITY: Chapter 35, Article I-1, Division 2 Municipal code, City of South Bend, indiana 1400-02 - DESCRIPTIONS Whereas: The Board of Public Works deems it necessary to establish a firm policy for the backfilling of ez--avations and replacemen of pavement disturbed as a result of making an opening or excavation in any street, these specifications are set forth and the compliance therewith shall be a requirement of obtaining a permit for said opening 9 excavation under Chapter 35, Article 11, Division 2,, Excavations, as set forth in the South Bend Municipal Code. Xt shall be the obligation of an person, firm or corporation obtaining a permit for an opening or excavation in the public right -o£ -way to backfill the excavation and replace the pavement as set forth in these 'specif i cations: BackfIll. - All excavations under pavement shall be backfilled with reasonably clean granular material w -it -h good compaction qualities. The material shall be placed in layers not to exceed 6 inches in depth. Eac layer shall be thoroughly tamped with a vibratory type mechanical tamper Special care shall be taken in filling around sewers, water pipes, gas lines, etc., to keep the earth at the same height on both sides to avoid shifting the pipe line. No removed paving materials or debris shall be used in backfilling the excavation. Excavations not under a pavement riz I be backfilled with virgin material removed from the excavation. Pavement Replacement - All pavement shall be replaced with a type i, construction equal to or better than that which is removed,' as approvecl, writting by the City Engineer. All concrete pavement removal shall be the nearest joint. Joints in concrete replacement pavement shall match the existing joints in the pavement - 17
