page 23
2. 1071 Riverside Drive --Local Historic District
Mr. Pastor reported four proposals. The first
involved lighting; replacing two lanterns flanking
the front entry with catalina lighting fixtures,
and replacing the light over the side door. The
third proposal was to replace the garage door with
a flat -profile door; the fourth was to install a
wrought -iron handrail on the front steps. The
staff and committee approved all these proposals,.
but did suggest a profiled garage door instead of
a flat one.
Mr. Herendeen moved to approve the staff report;
Mr. Eide seconded the motion. Motion approved
unanimously.
Mr. Herendeen commented that the light fixtures
being replaced were beautiful, but no criteria
existed to prevent their removal. One of the old
fixtures, admittedly, was badly deteriorated; but
no criteria existed for recommending alternate
fixtures as replacements.
Mr. Holycross reported that the.0 of A committee
had met with Mr. Murphy regarding the oval window
on the rear extension of the house. The committee
determined that Mr. Murphy could not represent an
adequate case for economic hardship, and upheld
the HPC's January decision requiring the window's
replacement with one more appropriate. Mr. Murphy
had been informed of his options, one of which was
to appear before the Common Council. On February
17, Mr. Murphy had submitted a stack of
papers --letters of support, primarily --to the
staff. These he distributed to the commission
members, advising them that these documents had
not been received until after the committee
meeting.
Mr. Holycross further reported that Ms. Manion and
Mr_ Murphy had declared their intention to appear
before the Common Council. He was not sure they
were in earnest.
Mr. Oxian moved to deny the case for economic
hardship. Mr. Herendeen seconded the motion.
Motion ..__aproved__unanimously_
IV.
