awareness of preservation in the local community and beyond.
The Summary Report as published will Iconsist of: a table of
contents; an introduction; a section explaining methodology; a
section describing the city's history, architecture and important
architects; a guide to historic resources in the city; the
catalog of sites and structures; a conclusion; a bibliography;
and an index.
The introduction will give a brief description of the Indiana
Sites and Structures Inventory project as a whole and the survey
as undertaken in this city. It will also describe the various
uses for the document. The methodology section will provide a
brief account of the procedures used in the survey, explaining
such things as the rating system, mapping and numbering, and the
criteria used to evaluate historic properties.
In the following two sections, South Bend's architecture will be
placed in context with the dominant historical themes of the
city --principally industry, commerce and ethnic heritage.
Important architects and their designs will also be summarized. A
discussion of the city's historic resources will then provide a
description of the area's dominant architectural traditions and
styles --explaining both high -style and the vernacular forms found
here.
The catalog itself will be the bulk of the publication. It will
list the sites and structures and include a brief description of
each. Maps will be provided for geographical orientation. The
majority of the city will be organized by the mile square
quadrants used to orient the survey. Separate sections will also
be included for local historic and National Register districts
with brief histories of each. The entire volume will contain both
historic and survey photographs. Photographs will enhance the
graphic quality of the volume and provide examples of the local
historic built environment.
The conclusion will provide information concerning local
preservation and sources for further information. The
bibliography and index will make the volume easier to access and
provide both historical source information as well as sources for
further study.
The projected schedule for the project will be divided into three
periods:
1. Research, organizing survey data and maps, and data
entry.
2. Gathering, choosing and organizing survey and historic
photographs, concluding necessary research, writing and editing
the text of the volume, and finalizing data entry of information
to be utilized by the printers.
3. Final editing of the volume and working with the
graphics/printing firm in the design and lay -out of the volume.
