From: Grant proposal submitted to DNR/Div. of Hist. Pres. etc., 1991.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION AND TIMETABLE
SOUTH BEND SUMMARY REPORT PROJECT
The South Bend Historic Sites and Structures Inventory was begun
in 1975 and completed in 1980. A second phase of update and
revision was begun in 1986 and will be completed in June, 1992.
At that time the Survey Records Management Project, Phase VI of
the resurvey, will have revised and updated the survey data,
transferring it onto appropriate state forms with accompanying
photographs, and combined both surveys into a computer data base.
To complete the project, the Historic Preservation Commission of
South Bend and St. Joseph County is requesting funding with which
to compile and publish a Summary Report documenting the results
of the surveys. The project will begin July 1, 1992 and conclude
June 30, 1993. The Commission will employ a Administrative
Assistant and a Research Assistant to work on the project in
conjunction with the Director of the Commission.
The scope of the project will consist of: organizing survey data,
photographs and maps; gathering historic photographs and other
visual materials; conducting necessary research; and writing,
editing and assembling the information into a coherent form. The
data will then be turned over to a graphics and printing firm
with the expertise and equipment to conduct the final printing of
the Summary Report. All Federal regulations regarding proper
bidding procedures will be strictly followed.
The project will be directed and monitored in all its phases by
the Director. The Administrative Assistant will be responsible
for managing the computer data base, ensuring relevant
information is organized for efficient utilization by the
printers, and assisting the Director in other tasks as needed.
The Research Assistant will conduct research as directed and
assist in data entry and other tasks as needed.
The primary goal of this project is to conclude the South Bend
Historic Sites and Structures Inventory project with a concise
published summary of survey and research results. The publication
will be of value to a wide range of audiences including
historical agencies and organizations, governmental agencies and
officials, and local citizens and citizen groups.
Correlative goals include encouraging historic preservation in
the local community; providing individuals and organizations
information with which to determine appropriate properties for
inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places; providing
a source of historical data for local planning and redevelopment
purposes; and providing a catalyst for stimulating a greater
