all sites and structures eligible for inclusion on the Indiana
Historic Sites and Structures Inventory were identified
concretely and assigned a rating during the windshield survey.
Survey forms were then processed for each site using a computer
database.
The actual data gathering for each site began in September of
1991; research of significant properties began in December of
1991. (note: the findings of the windshield survey, 632 sites,
has since decreased somewhat as nearly a dozen buildings have
been vinyl sided in the interim).
The project continues into 1992 with a ending date of June 31.
ENVIRONMENTAL/SECTION 106 REVIEWS
In accordance with federal requirements as a Certified Local
Government, the HPC staff reviewed the agendas of the Area Plan
Commission and the Department of Code Enforcement in order to
identify locally designated or National Register properties that
would be impacted by the agencies' actions.
The staff also reviewed fifty-eight (58) Section 106 and 312
applications during this period. The HPC has maintained its progr
agreement with the SHPO and National Advisory Council to ensure
protection of cultural properties which are listed on or qualify
for the National Register.
NATIONAL REGISTER NOMINATIONS
Lori Dixon worked on an application for an extension to the West
Washington National Register District; the application is still
in process. Due to staff changes, the nomination has temporarily
been put aside. it is the intention of the present Director to
finish this application in the first half of 1992.
The staff assisted local resident, Kevin Smith, with his
reapplication for Union Station in South Bend. The staff also
assisted historian, Glory June Grieff, presently preparing a
National Register application for the central business district
of New Carlisle, Indiana. The HPC received no other National
Register applications during 1991.
