The Magnolia
was first featured in the
1918 Modem Homes cata-
log, which advertised it for
$5,140. (John Helmer)
s an Air Force family, we have lived with ourfour
C::;;'l children in many strange, wonderful and not -so -
wonderful houses, large and small, throughout the world.
In 1969, on retirement from the Air Force, .we purchased
our dream house in South Bend, Ind., a two-story neo-
classical structure built in 1927. R were very happy with
our purchase, our first real home, and named it April
House. 1% planted several magnolias in front.
-R did some redecorating but left the kitchen as it
was, with its blue and white tile floor. R are both cooks,
and the kitchen became the heart of our home. It was the
place for our cooking classes (Gourmet 101, Indiana Uni-
versity at South Bend) and where the Notre Dame Cook
Book was bom. Holidays, graduations, weddings and
christenings were all an important part of the kitchen
activities.
In 1982 we discovered that our house was the Magno-
lia, a Sears Honor Bill house. We were quite excited and
very proud—we felt the house was true Americana. The
magnolias in front had more meaning than ever before,
and we planted several more along the side. And even
though the children are gone, our dream house is still
full—with students, family and friends.
Francis A. and Florence G.
