March 20, 1978
Page 10
about the allocations of the budget at this point.
Ms. Peck then spoke about the MACOG report which she had discussed
is at the last meeting. She said the responsibility of this report is
no longer that of the Commission, except to oversee their results
as to the historic structures and sites in the MACOG region. Jeanne
Denham is re-writiig_the history.
Ms. Peck said the Commission needs to allocate some travel expense
money for Ellen Kettler. She will be charging 15¢ a mile at 180
miles, at a cost of $27.00. She also asked whether a fee was
indicated for her appearance. Mrs. Price said she shouldn't receive
a fee as each member organization of the Trust is allowed one visit
per annum. There was further discussion on this issue. Mr. Oxian
made a motion that the only expense the Commission would incur, is
on mileage, and that if there are any extra expenditures such as,
meals that they be handled separately. The motion was made for
these $27.00 be paid Ms. Kettler. Mrs. Price seconded this motion,
and it passed unanimously.
7. Old Business
There was no old business to discuss at this time.
8. New Business
Mr. Oxian brought up a letter which Mr. Smith had given him, which
• was sent to the parishoners of St. James Cathedral on February 24th,
concerning the former South Bend Art Center building. He read the -
letter which stated that the committee recommended that this build-
ing be demolished. The status of the Peterson building would be
determined next month. He further said he received a call from one
of the parishoners, who wanted to know what the Commission could do
about the demolition of the St. James Building. He replied that the
Commission could do nothing money -wise, but perhaps the parishoners
could inquire as to possible landmark status. He felt the Commission
should be so informed. The St. James building is the old YWCA build-
ing, which is the old Art Center. Mr. Oxian recommended that a survey
card be filled out on this building either by John Stamper or Brian
Crumlish. He said he would call to see whether a final decision had
been made on this building. Mr. Wasielewski authorized that a survey
card be made. There was further discussion on this matter. Mr. Stivers
mentioned that only the third floor was used.. Mr. Oxian was instructed
to contact the owners to find out what their intentions are ;and get a
survey card.
Mr. Oxian then brought up the house that was bought up by the airport,
and also mentioned all those homes that the county is going to buy
for the Olive -Sample overpass. He said he would like to suggest to
the County Commissioners that possibly have these homes be either
given to Southhold Restorations, Inc., or the Foundation to see if
people can be found to buy these homes for a dollar and move them to
some other lot. He said there were some excellent homes that could
be moved. He felt the Commission should find a way to sage as many
of these homes as could be done. He would like to recommend this to
the Commissioners and also get some of the other groups to act in this.
