Key Performance Indicator: Specific Energy (k k
efofe O ¢imp za ion
After Optimization
Figure 3. After implementing an optimization strategy, actual conditions closely correlate with
the optimal set -points for wastewater treatment.
Since implementing the BLU-X solution, the Cuxhaven treatment plant has shown a 26%
reduction in aeration energy usage, corresponding to 1.1 million kWh annually — enough
energy to power 64 homes for one year. In addition, all plant effluent concentrations
continue to be tightly maintained within regulatory compliance limits.
Statement of Work and Deliverables:
The purpose of a Discovery Project is to identify and quantify opportunities for treatment
optimization via the implementation of a BLU-X RT-DSS. In Phase 1: Discovery
Project, EmNet will complete the following scope of work:
1. Review Existing Data. Request and review information relevant to South Bend's
WWTP. As examples, some information requested may include:
• reports/studies
• plant size and basic specs
• influent/effluent data
• sludge treatment process
• nitrification/aeration process
• phosphate precipitation
• energy usage
• analytical data
• other constituents (fats, oils and grease (FOG), temperature, pH, etc.)
• biological parameters
• compliance constraints
• sensor and existing control system information
• current standard operational procedures
Page 4 of 6
