South Bend Redevelopment Commission
scheduled Regular Meeting - January 4, 1995
6. NEW BUSINESS (Cont.)
a. continued...
Park. The Southeast Neighborhood
organization and the Park Department, and
Redevelopment wanted to replace the park.
The planning committee is deciding on what
facilities they want in the park, how they
want the park to be used. It will back up
onto residential properties on Broadway. It
will serve the neighborhood. You are right,
we do expect new residential development
that South Bend Heritage is building. That
will be next to it. Obviously, no one wants
to build a park that will just be empty land.
That's why we're waiting to design the park
until we have some more information,
although they are getting closer on that. So,
it's part of an overall strategy. This was the
area that was in the worst condition and it
was just felt that without some action on the
public's part, private investment would not
take place. It was unrealistic to expect
someone to invest private money in there
without a drastic step to redevelop the area.
That was the intent of the plan and what
we're doing here today.
MR. JON sMrrH: Well, all I want to know, is
for them to send me a price about what
they're going to offer me for my home
because I've already found me another
home. I'm getting clean out of the
neighborhood. I'm getting too old to be
buying another old home and then, two or
three years later, I have to repair everything
in it, just like I've done in the one I've
already got. I got about $25,000 - $26,000
tied up in it already. And I had to put that
sw -22-
