South Bend Redevelopment Commission
scheduled Regular Meeting - January 4, 1995
6. NEW BUSINESS (Cont.)
a. continued...
MRS. KOLATA: The determination that was
made when this was originally declared a
redevelopment area was to draw the
Southeast Neighborhood into three sections.
The first section stops at the alley between
Pennsylvania and Broadway. That is the
area that is designated for redevelopment,
because that is the area where most of the
vacant lots were, that's where the highest
percentage of deteriorated homes were, and
that was the area that was determined to be
cleared and made available to start anew.
From the blue line (on the map) south to
Dubail is the area that we're talking about
revitalization. There are strong homes
there, strong streets, enough houses on the
IL streets. The idea is to strengthen that part
of the neighborhood and not have it
deteriorate the way the area to the north
deteriorated. The third portion of the
Southeast Neighborhood is between Dubail
and Ewing. Residentially, that is the
strongest part of the neighborhood. We
intend to make some housing programs
available there.
We have been working with the
neighborhood organization. Any of you
who want to be involved on the planning
committees, I know you've had the
opportunity to join. There are a series of
committees and Southeast Quality of Life
would love to have you be there and have
your input. The idea of having the park in
this general area is because we are
purchasing and eliminating Dean Johnson
LeL-21-
