South Bend Redevelopment Commission <br />Regular Meeting —June 28, 2011 <br />This Center will allow the Institute of Latino <br />Studies and the University of Notre Dame to <br />expand their presence in the community, <br />while rehabilitating an historic property, and <br />partnering with the broader Michiana area. <br />To allow this exciting project to begin, <br />additional funding is needed. With the <br />Commission's participation, eleven (11) <br />different funding sources will be utilized to <br />rehabilitate the Hansel Center. Total project <br />costs are estimated at $2.481 million. With <br />the original Commission approved funds of <br />$130,000 in CDBG and $370,000 in <br />WWCDA funding, an additional $430,000 in <br />WWCDA funding is requested. With total <br />allocated funds of $930,000 by the <br />Commission, the project can soon begin. <br />In addition, a Memorandum of <br />Understanding (MOU) is currently being <br />drafted between the Redevelopment <br />Commission, University of Notre Dame, and <br />South Bend Heritage Foundation. It is <br />requested that upon approval by Legal, Don <br />Inks be authorized to sign this MOU. <br />Mr. Brown Gort, Associate Director of the <br />Institute for Latino Studies, University of <br />Notre Dame spoke. For Notre Dame, this <br />Notre Dame Center for Arts and Culture <br />represents the place where Notre Dame is <br />going to concentrate in engaging with the <br />community. There have been changes in the <br />University over the last several years. Rev. <br />John Jenkins is really taking a leadership in <br />reintegrating us to a place where we are with <br />economic development. <br />Mr. Varner asked what the return for the city <br />is going to be.
