South Bend Redevelopment Commission
Regular Meeting —June 14, 2011
adequate ventilation and airflow. Air flow and
ventilation become a particular problem when
there are sick animals in the shelter. Many of the
common pathogens that affect animals are
airborne pathogens. Without adequate airflow
and /or the space to quarantine sick animals;
diseases spread rapidly throughout the building.
We believe that in addition to the direct benefits
that SBA CC customers and the animals in our care
will enjoy; there are many indirect benefits that the
surrounding neighborhood will experience as well.
Some of these benefits include:
• The new facility will be an attractive addition to
our City's Westside. This will be good for neighborhood
safety.
• On a weekly basis, SBA CC staff is responsible for
monitoring several juvenile offenders as they
complete their community service requirement at
our facility. With a newer, safer facility, we will be
better able to work with these children in a
2
way that is more constructive for the children's
development and supportive of our staff.
• Incorporated into the new building's design is a
spay /neuter clinic. We have already received
commitments from local veterinarians who will be
donating their time to perform free spay /neuter
surgeries for our animals. This would remove the
